Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids were first discovered in the 1930s. These are basically synthetic variations of testosterone which is a male hormone. These steroids are used to promote growth of bones and muscles. Anabolic steroids help increase cell growth along with division and also facilitate growth in the body tissue. There are as many as 100 different kinds of steroids. Along with short term effects of anabolic steroids usage of these drugs can also result in some irreversible and damaging long term effects.

As anabolic steroids help in growth of appetite, muscle and bone growth these are used to treat some medical problems. However these properties of steroids have also resulted in a large number of youngsters and professional sports person abusing these steroids. The increased protein synthesis along with growth in muscle mass has resulted in a number of people using these steroids and consequently some short term effects of anabolic steroids are observed.

Some of the common harmful effects of anabolic steroids include increased LDL or harmful cholesterol and decrease in the HDL cholesterol. Also people using anabolic steroids may experience high blood pressure along with considerable liver damage and cardiovascular problems. As users start taking steroids they experience some immediate and effects of anabolic steroids.

These steroids are often taken either orally or by way of injections and the users taken them in cycles lasting weeks or months. Such an intake can result in some short term effects of anabolic steroids. While these steroids will result in increased body weight and muscle mass along with feelings of elation they also cause some negative side effects. These may include jaundice, fluid retention and even liver tumors.

To combat these harmful side effects of anabolic steroids many users tend to take them for a certain period of time and then stop the usage. Such pattern of steroid usage is called cycling. One of the positive effects of anabolic steroids is that these allow the users to train harder and for longer periods of time.

Some other effects of anabolic steroids include growth of facial hair in women along with cessation or changes in the menstrual cycle and deepening of the voice. In men usage of anabolic steroids can result in shrinking of the testicles along with reduced sperm count and development of breast like tissue. It is important to understand that these are not short term effects of anabolic steroids and are some of the irreversible changes that steroids bring about.

Other short term effects of anabolic steroids may include increased aggressiveness along with delusions and paranoia among those taking the steroids. Other temporary effects include problems in sleeping and changes in appetite, flushing of face and mood and behaviour changes.
