Anabolic Steroids

Dangers Of Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids are basically a synthetic copy of testosterone which is a male hormone. These anabolic steroids are helpful in building muscles and providing strength. Initially steroids were used for some medical purposes such as controlling inflammation and providing relief from symptoms of asthma and arthritis. Dangers of anabolic steroids have only been propounded off late when the abuse of these drugs started.

Many athletes and other sports persons started abusing steroids to achieve enhanced performance in sports competition. This was because not only do steroids help in improving performance but they also help in quick recovery following an injury. This means athletes are able to train harder and for longer periods of time. Research has now thrown light on the dangers of anabolic steroids and the harm that these can cause to the body.

Athletes use anabolic steroid to increase their strength, stamina and muscle size. However dependence on the drugs may occur and it is one of the dangers of anabolic steroids. An athlete may take steroids for a period of time and if these are stopped then the athlete may notice a reduction in the muscle mass. So many athletes tend to develop addiction problems. Likewise depression following cessation of anabolic steroids is also widely observed.

Side effects are one of the dangers of anabolic steroids. This is particularly true in case of individuals who do not have knowledge about the steroids. The extent of side effects is dependent directly on the kind of steroids that are used along with the dosage of the steroids. Therefore it is difficult to predict the exact side effects a person might experience after using steroids. One of the biggest problems with using steroids is that if these are taken in high doses and for long periods of time then it might result in permanent and harmful changes in the natural production of testosterone in the body.

Some other dangers of anabolic steroids include increased liver function and consequent liver problems. Depression is seen in those who abuse steroids and there may also be an increase in blood pressure along with the cholesterol levels. The thyroid function may be altered because of use of steroids. Other common side effects because of use of steroids include headaches, nose bleeds and cramps.

Among men the dangers of anabolic steroids are seen in the form of some irreversible and harmful side effects. These include development or growth of breast like tissue which is called gynecomastia. Other side effects include enlargement of prostate, water retention, aggressiveness, thinning hair and increased body hair. Steroids may also cause some other problems like development or acceleration of tumor growth.

Women who use these drugs also need to be educated about the dangers of anabolic steroids. These include effects such as growth of hair particularly facial hair, deepening of voice and clitoral enlargement. Some side effects that are seen with oral steroids include nausea, constipation, vomiting and diarrhea. Adolescents taking steroids should also understand the dangers of steroids. Steroids can cause stunted growth in adolescents. Other dangerous effects of steroids include delusions, paranoia and extreme aggressiveness.
