Steroid use in sports was first observed in the international weightlifting competition in the year 1954. The Soviet team dominated the entire competition. Steroids are synthetic versions of testosterone which is a male hormone.

Use of anabolic steroids in baseball has helped in providing rapid development of muscles and increase in the strength. Steroids are therefore used by athletes to attain that extra edge. Cases of steroid use were uncovered when a nutritional supplement bottle was obtained from the locker of Mark McGwire. This bottle contained a prohormone called Androstendione and this compound could convert into another compound in the body. This compound converted to testosterone in the body.

The use of anabolic steroids in baseball was confirmed when Ken Caminiti declared that he had used anabolic steroids. He also revealed that as many as fifty percent players in the major league were using anabolic steroids. In fact Jose Conseco indicated that around 85% of the players were using steroids. Even thought training and skill have contributed to all the records in baseball the use of anabolic steroids in baseball and its impact on the game cannot be denied.
