Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroid Statistics

Anabolic steroids which are synthetic variations of the male hormone testosterone are increasingly used by athletes and other professionals. This is because the anabolic steroids tend to promote development of muscles and improve performance. Steroid abuse has actually become a problem in many professional sports. Anabolic steroid statistics indicate that even amateur athletes use steroids believing that these drugs will help them perform better. There is also a belief among athletes that steroids help in the recovery process after an injury and so many of them take steroids.

Anabolic steroid statistics as per a study conducted between the period of 1999 and 2001 revealed some interesting figures. In the year 1999 as many as 2.7 % students in the tenth grade reported that they had used steroids at least once in their life. Also among the twelfth grade students as many as 2.9% reportedly used steroids. The same figures in 2001 had increased to 3.5% among the tenth grade students while the figures of twelfth grade students having used steroids had increased to around 4%.

The anabolic steroid statistics also included a study for determining the frequency of the use of steroids. Accordingly the study revealed that around 1% of the tenth grade students had used the steroids as early as one month preceding the particular survey. Around 2.2% had used steroids in a year preceding the particular survey. Among the twelfth group students around 1.4% had used steroid a month before the survey while 2.5 % had used steroids a year before the survey.

Anabolic steroid statistics indicates that the steroid use on the whole among students has declined. In 2003 the percentage of students using steroids had reached 6.1% while in 2005 this figure has dropped to 4%. Even though this decline is comforting it would be important to understand that self reports are largely under presented. Anabolic steroid statistics also reveal that the factors that determine the decision to use or not use steroids include race, gender along with the cultural beliefs. The research also indicates that students of Caucasian descent are more likely to indulge in steroid use as compared to other races such as Hispanics and African Americans.

Gender also contributes towards this addiction. Men tend to use steroids far more than women as women are often encouraged to be thin while men are encouraged to be strong, athletic and masculine. The best way to deal with the increasing anabolic steroids abuse is by educating young athletes and other people to use natural ways of bulking up. These include weight bearing and cardiovascular exercises along with a healthy diet.
