Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroid Research

Anabolic steroids were discovered in the process of anabolic steroid research which was aimed at developing treatment for some conditions such as hypogonadism. In this condition the testes does not produce enough testosterone for growth and development along with sexual functioning. These steroids are used to handle specific medical issues such as delayed puberty, body wastage following HIV and some kinds of impotence. Steroids are also used to help increase appetite.

In conducting the anabolic steroid research scientists were able to determine that the steroids could cause growth in the skeletal muscle among laboratory animals. Following this discovery these compounds were used and abused by professional athletes and bodybuilders. These steroid hormones increased the protein synthesis in the cells and this in turn resulted in cellular tissue build up particularly in the muscles.

Anabolic steroid research indicates that anabolic refers to the building up process of tissue and muscles while androgenic properties result in development of the masculine features and characteristics such as development of vocal chords and growth of body hair.

As a part of the anabolic steroid research finally anabolic steroids were developed and these could be taken either orally or applied on the skin or taken through injections. The injections are use intramuscularly. Many users take multiple steroids believing that this will help in producing greater effect on the muscles groups. Anabolic steroid research conducted in 2008 indicates that as many as 1.4% of students in the eighth grade, 1.4% students in the tenth grade and 2.2% students in the twelfth grade have used steroids once in their lifetime. The research also indicates that steroid abuse can result in a whole range of side effects including acne, development of breasts among men, cardiovascular problems and liver problems.

Other problems associated with the use of anabolic steroids include shrinking of testicles and increased aggressiveness among men. Among women the problems that occur following intake of steroids include changes in the menstrual cycle, growth of facial hair and deepening of voice along with enlargement of the clitoris. Research on anabolic steroids also reveals that anabolic steroids are illicitly sold in gyms and are smuggled into the country and distributed through mail operations. Following the extensive abuse of anabolic steroids these have been declared as Schedule III drugs and can be purchased only with a valid prescription.
